Emily Mancia

Community Schools Workforce Literacy VISTA

 About The VISTA Member:

Emily Mancia graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Political Science. She developed a passion for public education through her volunteer and coursework. As an undergraduate she also worked on a research project centered around education and technology. She is particularly interested in the intersections of race, class, and education. She is excited to join the Office of Adult Education as the Community Schools Workforce Literacy VISTA.

About The VISTA Position:

Adult low literacy is a key contributor to Philadelphia’s deep poverty crisis. Nearly 1 in 2 Philadelphians lack basic and workforce literacy skills required of today’s technology-based job market, which leaves working-aged adults excluded from the labor market. The VISTA will work with the City of Philadelphia, School District of Philadelphia, Office of Adult Education, adult education providers, and other stakeholders to develop, coordinate and implement strategies that integrate workforce literacy programs in Community Schools, thereby helping adults get the skills required of family-sustaining employment.
